Dogue De Bordeaux Rescue
In a Dogue De Bordeaux rescue, you can find many dogs surrendered by their owners. The Dogue De Bordeaux is one of the most ancient French breeds developed as a general purpose dog. It’s the descendant of the Tibetan Mastiff and is probably related to the Greco Roman Molosser-type dogs used for war. According to the other theory, this breed is a descendant of the Dogues de Bordeaux of Aquitaine. The true origin of the breed is unknown, but it’s known for sure that the Dogue De Bordeaux shares the common ancestry with all modern Molosser-type breeds.
From the 14th century, the Dogue De Bordeaux was used for a variety of tasks from weight pulling to guarding the property, hunting, and herding cattle. In the beginning of the 20th century, the uniform type of the breed appeared. Devoted breeders and breed fanciers did their best to keep the old breeding line pure and avoided mixing the Dogue De Bordeaux with the English Mastiff and other breeds. Original Dogue De Bordeaux has no facial mask, lighter eye color, and self-colored nose. Until the 1970s there was no need in a Dogue De Bordeaux rescue, as this breed was very rare outside France.
Though Doguee De Bordeaux first came to the USA in the late 19th century for participating in shows, selective breeding of these dogs started in the 1980s when the typical American family could buy a pet of this breed. Popularity of the breed often means irresponsible breeding and ownership. Unfortunately, in the 1990s many Dogues De Bordeaux were bred by profit-oriented breeders and bought by impulsive buyers. The same attitude to breeding dogs of popular breeds persists up to nowadays. No wander that it’s easy to find a purebred or mixed dog in a Dogue De Bordeaux rescue.
The Dogue De Bordeaux is characterized by a loyal and even temperament. These gentle giants are calm and devoted to the family and make good companions for children. They are gifted for guarding without aggressiveness. Though low maintenance, these dogs need much space and food. Most dogs are surrendered to the Dogue De Bordeaux rescue because of their large size.
