The exact origin of the breed is unknown. There are several theories tracing the Dogue’s De Bordeaux origin from the Greek and Roman war dog Molossus, from the dogs of Aquitaine, from Tibetan Masitiffs, from mastiffs brought to Europe by the Alans, or from Spanish Burgo dogs. Thoughout its history, the Dogue De Bordeaux had many uses. It served as a war dog, participated in dog fights and bull baiting, herder the cattle, protected the owner, guarded the property, pulled carts, and hunted big game.

Like all other intelligent and strong dogs, they cannot do without mental and physical exercise. Outdoor living is not for these gentle and devoted dogs, as they thrive on attention and communication with the family. The lifespan of the breed is around 12 years.
