Dogue de Bordeaux are working dogs that can be used in tracking, weight pulling, sledding, and guarding. They have common ancestors with Mastiff-type dogs, known for their ferocious personality traits and great strength that provided for good fighting and guarding qualities. Nowadays, the Dogue de Bordeaux is a gentle dog that serves primarily as a human companion. Breed fanciers took care of the preservation of this ancient dog and bred out some undesirable traits.

The Dogue de Bordeaux is not readily available due to some difficulties in the breeding process and high costs involved.

Dogue De Bordeaux - Appearance

Dogue de Bordeaux are heavy-boned dogs with a short double coat. They are built closely to the ground and distinguished for a large head. The muzzle should be about 1/3 of the head. The lack of a red or a black mask is considered a fault. The muzzle is moderately long, with the upper lips covering the lower part of the jaws. Dogue de Bordeaux should have an undershot bite. Eyes are dark, though light-colored eyes are said to be more frequently seen.

The coat is smooth and thick. Like all dogs of the Mastiff type, the Dogue de Bordeaux's coat is loose, forming wrinkles on the head and the body. The tail reaches the hocks and should never curve over the back.
