Dogue de Bordeaux are working dogs that can be used in tracking, weight pulling, sledding, and guarding. They have common ancestors with Mastiff-type dogs, known for their ferocious personality traits and great strength that provided for good fighting and guarding qualities. Nowadays, the Dogue de Bordeaux is a gentle dog that serves primarily as a human companion. Breed fanciers took care of the preservation of this ancient dog and bred out some undesirable traits.
The Dogue de Bordeaux is not readily available due to some difficulties in the breeding process and high costs involved. Dogue De Bordeaux - Appearance
Dogue de Bordeaux are heavy-boned dogs with a short double coat. They are built closely to the ground and distinguished for a large head. The muzzle should be about 1/3 of the head. The lack of a red or a black mask is considered a fault. The muzzle is moderately long, with the upper lips covering the lower part of the jaws. Dogue de Bordeaux should have an undershot bite. Eyes are dark, though light-colored eyes are said to be more frequently seen.
The coat is smooth and thick. Like all dogs of the Mastiff type, the Dogue de Bordeaux's coat is loose, forming wrinkles on the head and the body. The tail reaches the hocks and should never curve over the back. Height: 23-30 inches
Weight: 120-145 pounds
Dogue De Bordeaux - Personality
Dogue de Bordeaux are said to be friendly with family members and those close to them from an early age. Their inborn protectiveness makes them wonderful watchdogs and guardians. They can be rather suspicious to strangers and are not good with same sex dogs. Compatibility with other pets is medium.
Dogue De Bordeaux - Exercise Needs
Those considering buying a Dogue de Bordeaux should bear in mind that this breed needs a lot of exercise. The lack of exercise will doom your pet on having health problems and premature aging.
Life Span: 10-12 years
Registries: ANKC, FCI, NKC, NZKC, OREBA, CKC. Dogue De Bordeaux - Origin
Dogue de Bordeaux are thought to have originated from the Molossus, a huge ancient dog that was used to fight wild animals and serve as a war dog. Dogue de Bordeaux would also herd cattle and take part in bull-baiting.
